GeoTracker commercial GPS tracking system overview

GeoTracker is a UK based commercial vehicle fleet GPS location tracking and driver behaviour monitoring system. There are several 'plug-ins' that allow the system to be more closely tailored to customers needs. Tracked vehicles and their tracks can be easily reviewed in real-time by authenticated users using the GeoTracker web application. What the user is allowed to see and do can be restricted according to their 'role'. The web application also provides easy to review track maps, graphs and analysis charts to allow customers to gain an instant picture on how their fleet and drivers are performing. The system is made up of the GeoTracker web application, vehicle location data receiving devices (e.g. SMS modems, TCP/IP pipes), server based services that process vehicle location data and the GPS location devices that are installed in vehicles. The web application and Microsoft Windows based services have been designed in such a way that they are easily scalable both vertically and horizontally to cater for increases in demand.

The Geotracker system is designed to be easily scalable to take advantage of increasing demand. It is made up of separate web services that can be instantly replicated to increase resource capacity. It can run on the Windows Azure platform, is coded using C#, takes advantage of the MVC design pattern and Microsoft's SQL Server with Entity Framework as it's Object Relational Mapper (ORM).

GeoTracker is a commercial fleet GPS tacking reporting and driver monitoring web application. Commercial vehicle fleet data is easy to interpret using Geotracker's charts, graphs and visualisations. The visualisations, many of them 'map based', make trends easy to spot and analysis a simple task. The screenshot shows the dashboard that visualises in 'real-time' a summary of your fleets daily activity data. This allows fast interpretation and analysis for quick decision making and early warning. Vehicle journey speed and event data are recorded and are easy to interpret using GeoTracker's journey event chart and journey speed graph. Event locations can be viewed on Google Maps by clicking on the event icon in the journey event chart. Events are also displayed in 'real-time' on the live maps and also on historically recorded journey maps. Fleet and vehicle monthly mileage and cost data is easy to interpret using Geotracker.org.uk's mileage and running costs graphs that make trends easy to spot and analysis a simple task. These graphs can be viewed by vehicle and or by month and year.

Commercial GPS tracking driver and journey analysis

Commercial vehicle fleet data is easy to interpret using GeoTracker's charts, graphs and visualisations. The visualisations, many of them 'map based', make trends easy to spot and analysis a simple task. These visualisations can be filtered by vehicle and by date to allow drilling down to gain a better analysis of specific areas of interest. The scope and concentration of vehicle journeys can be easily analysed and interpreted using GeoTracker's journey cluster maps. These draw historical vehicle journeys on the map, that can be filtered by date and vehicle, to reveal journey clusters that make trends easy to spot and analysis a simple task. Historical events type and frequency data are easy to interpret using Geotracker's event matrix chart. The event matrix chart makes driver behaviour easy to monitor, analyse and trends easy to spot. The events matrix chart can be filtered by date and event type and sorted by vehicle and event frequency. Event locations can be viewed on a map to reveal where events took place by 'clicking through' the events matrix chart for a particular vehicle.

The web application graphs and analysis pages have been developed using MVC, WebAPI, Javascript and Google Maps API.

Commercial GPS tracking devices

The Geotracker system supports many commercially available GPS tracking devices and GPS tracking data from devices that are not already supported can be easily accommodated. However, a prototype GPS tracking device was also developed for use with the GeoTracker system. It has a number of bespoke features. It not only sends GPS location data but it is also able to store and send later if there is no GSM cell coverage, auto upload to a company network or server, send vehicle health data from a vehicle's OBD2 port and optionally send location data using low orbiting satellites in GSM cell coverage 'black spots'.

The GeoTracker prototype GPS tracking device was developed and created using embedded C and the Arduino family of rapid prototyping board, Spot devices and other rapid prototyping modules.
